I spend a lot of time wandering the hills around Gairloch and often come across piles of stones in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes these features turn out to be something of archaeological interest. Due to the remoteness of the area and the difficult terrain, much of the archaeology is unrecorded, so it is important that these sites are surveyed and documented for others to scrutinise further.

This website showcases several projects that have been started and probably will never be completed - the next project always seems to begin before the last one is finished.

Most of the survey work can only be carried out when the bracken is down. This is best between January and May, although weather conditions for surveying are much better during the summer. Unfortunately, vast swathes of bracken cover and obscure features for much of the summer and autumn.

I am privileged to be able to use data recorded by Roy Wentworth, who scoured almost every corner of the Gairloch area and amassed a wealth of information. He also made sure that all the original Gaelic features and place names were recorded and mapped.

I would also like to thank Nevis Hulme for keeping me under control with Gaelic place names, as OS maps often depict incorrect spelling.
